I can’t believe I’ve been writing a blog for so long and haven’t written about Aysgarth Falls. There might have been mention within walks on here but not specifically about the falls.
I suppose if you’ve visited the glorious Yorkshire Dales you will know of the falls, if not, indeed, have visited them already! If so you will know what a wonderful sight these can be, whether in dry weather or in wet when in full flood.
A great place, in the better weather, to take a picnic and just lay back and listen to water flowing by. If the weather isn’t nice enough to picnic and you’ve enjoyed exploring and in need of sustenance, try the Mill Race Tea Shop situated by the bridge over River Ure or try the Coppice Café at the Aysgarth National Park Centre, you can park here too.
Apparently the name Aysgarth comes from the old Norse meaning the open space in the oak trees. Still lots of oak trees about here along with other native species too and the area is now classed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Whilst walking round the falls you’ll probably find yourself in Freeholder’s Wood which, in spring, can be a carpet of wild flowers and if you’re lucky you may even catch a glimpse of roe deer.
In the last few years dormice have been introduced back into the wood although you will need to be there at night to see any I would think! The River Ure is bursting with life below the surface including trout, grayling and white clawed crayfish. Take a moment to stand and look and listen, how many species of birds can you see and hear?
Can you remember the film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves? The falls being the back drop to one of the scenes. Amongst the many visitors who have marvelled at the magnificence of the falls are Turner, Wordsworth and Ruskin but still people come to enjoy this watery spectacle. Take a leisurely stroll along the river bank or set off from here on one of the many lovely walks that can be found on your map OL30, sorry just had to get that in.
