Middleham in Wensleydale, the Yorkshire Dales

Middleham in Wensleydale

Now famous for its racehorses, although they been based here for 300 years, Middleham has been in existence since the Roman era and the castle which dominates the town, from 1190. We’ve all heard of Richard III, he became master of the castle in 1472 and it was his favourite home, having visited since 1462 learning the skills of knighthood, until 1485 when he was killed at the Battle of Bosworth.

Hard at work! West Burton village cross

Hard at work! West Burton village cross

Couldn't resist capturing these two hard at work on the village cross when walking down the green in West Burton. The village cross was originally built in 1820 and I would think has seen many changes in the inhabitants of the village, look out for the stocks on the east side, you can try them for size if you like! Follow the path that runs across the green here and see if you can find the bull ring, now disused of course but exposed as a remainder of past times.

Walking in Wensleydale, Leyburn to Harmby and back

Walking in Wensleydale, Leyburn to Harmby and back

It never ceases to amaze how many footpaths there are that I still haven’t walked in the glorious Yorkshire Dales and even just in Wensleydale, our last walking group walk was definitely no exception! We set off from Leyburn and took a circuitous route via Harmby and finished up at the newly refurbished Posthorn in the market place.

It must be spring in the Yorkshire Dales!

Spring is officially here at last and of course we are on British Summer time, somewhat confusing and contradictory. In The Dales over the last few days we have had beautiful sunny days with clear blue skies from dawn to dusk, occasionally spoilt by early morning mist but atmospheric and dew dropping if nothing else. The dawn chorus is getting louder and longer each day and there is more than a hint of romance in the avian air. A swallow’s nest from last year hangs under the eaves of our house and is currently being spring cleaned and refurbished with wisps of dried grass and straw.
