Circular Walk from West Witton to Penhill Beacon and Trig Point in Wensleydale

My friend Denny and I have been walking the Yorkshire Dales together more than usual just lately (Den is the one in the picture) we’re in training to attempt the National Three Peaks, Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike, and Mount Snowdon, beginning of June but what better training ground than in the glorious Yorkshire Dales and this time walking to the top of Penhill.

The Garden Rooms at Tennants in Leyburn, Wensleydale

Have you been to The Garden Rooms yet for lunch? To be found in Leyburn at Tennants. Next time you’re here make a date. For something special try the restaurant, always best book, or after a walk in the hills perhaps a bite to eat in the café or afternoon tea even. Geoff and I went there a couple of weeks ago, we can’t resist always a good experience, food delicious, nice atmosphere and there’s usually an exhibition going on upstairs and if you come on a Friday its viewing day in next doors auctions rooms or on a Saturday there is almost always a sale.

Aysgarth Falls in the glorious Yorkshire Dales National Park

Aysgarth Falls in the glorious Yorkshire Dales National Park

I can’t believe I’ve been writing a blog for so long and haven’t written about Aysgarth Falls. There might have been mention within walks on here but not specifically about the falls. I suppose if you’ve visited the glorious Yorkshire Dales you will know of the falls, if not, indeed, have visited them already! If so you will know what a wonderful sight these can be, whether in dry weather or in wet when in full flood. A great place, in the better weather, to take a picnic and just lay back and listen to water flowing by.

Circular walk up Gunnerside Gill in Swaledale

Circular walk up Gunnerside Gill in Swaledale

Swaledale isn’t a place I’ve often walked, perhaps we feel there are so many lovely walks in Wensleydale that we don’t need to go much further afield. But a couple of friends suggested we did a circular walk up Gunnerside Gill and wow was it different. It was a cold winters morning, fine with light cloud and we made our way to Gunnerside above Reeth. Must just say though we did call in at the bakery in Reeth for scones and treats to munch along the way! There is a little car park just over the bridge in Gunnerside and luckily there was just one space left for us when we arrived.

The annual Swaledale Festival will take place again this year starting on Saturday 26 May and the last performances on Saturday 9 June. It’s always such a fabulous event. This year there will be young stars of the future alongside world-class instrumentalists, singers, actors, choirs, poets, films, exhibitions, talks, workshops, puppets, and a series of themed walks celebrating the magical landscape of the northern Dales.

Leyburn, a small market town in Wensleydale, the Yorkshire Dales

Leyburn, a small market town in Wensleydale, the Yorkshire Dales

Leyburn, a popular market town, can be found luxuriating on the hill above the River Ure and has magnificent views of Wensleydale. Walk along The Shawl footpath to experience these to the full, quite, quite breath taking. Structurally it hasn’t changed much at all for many, many years but yet the town and it’s custodians always manage to keep it up to date and interesting. Market day is held every Friday, visit the pretty Anglican church of St Matthew’s and the Catholic church of St Peter and St Paul, enjoy great food in the numerous café’s dotted around the square, quite a few pubs too.

Walk from Coverbridge Inn near Middleham, lower Wensleydale

Walk from Coverbridge IInn near Middleham, lower Wensleydale

Who knows how far we walked, some said seven miles, some six miles so we’ll call it six and half miles, all flat going, and really very, very pleasant. Lovely views to enjoy and walking on the sunny side of the dale! Park in the Cover Bridge Inn car park, no restrictions and set off in the direction of East Witton over the bridge. Immediately over the bridge take the footpath on the left and walk along the riverside. Couldn’t see any wild life, perhaps it was too cold and everything was staying in doors, but there were geese honking nearby although we couldn’t see them.
