The Fabulous Swaledale Festival coming up 25 May to 8 June 2019

Again an amazing programme to enjoy for fifteen exciting days in May and early June not only in Swaledale but Wensleydale too, Richmond Georgian Theatre, local churches and other local venues and villages. Some of the highlights include the legendary flamenco guitarist PACO PEÑA will play solo in Grinton Church. The phenomenal cellist SHEKU KANNEH-MASON will perform chamber music with his talented siblings and friends from the Royal Academy of Music. The great violinist TASMIN LITTLE will perform a solo recital and give a masterclass.

The Sandpiper Inn in Leyburn, Wensleydale

Our walking group decided we should have an evening meal together near to Christmas, as you do, and chose the Sandpiper Inn in Leyburn. None of us having been there for a while felt it was a good opportunity to try the place again. We were not disappointed, from the moment we walked in to leaving. Because there were quite a few of us we had been asked to choose our meal beforehand, from the Christmas menu of course, which didn’t really matter either way as I for one had completely forgotten what it was I had ordered.

Redmire, Preston under Scar, Lord’s Bridge in Wensleydale

Redmire, Preston under Scar, Lord’s Bridge in Wensleydale

No long hills, easy going, wonderful views, about 6 miles in a circular manner, what more could you want with a walk? We parked in Redmire, there is a designated parking area at the top of the green. From here you’ll see a footpath sign pointing in a northerly direction to the left of the parking area. Take this path and keep going steadily up hill, pass over the railway line (don’t forget to look and listen) and continue on uphill until you reach a road/track and turn right and walk to the end to meet the road.

The Little White Bus in Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

The Little White Bus in Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

My friend Wanda and I thought we’d have an adventure and catch the Little White Bus to Askrigg and then on to Hawes. Wanda, from sunny Scarborough, has stayed in our holiday cottages before and felt like a trip up the dale. So having studied the timetable off we went from West Burton village shop at precisely 10:10. We were soon whisked to Askrigg where we alighted and first stop, not bus stop this time, was Humble Pie for coffee and cake, always excellent and we were made so welcome.

The Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton and Two Glasses of Fizz!

Joanne and I were invited to a really lovely event at the Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton in Wensleydale, a thank you lunch. Around sixty people were there who all offer bed and breakfast or let holiday cottages and who, throughout the year, had helped to promote the Wensleydale Heifer each in their own small way. We were treated to a three course lunch with wine flowing and Joanne and I met some really interesting people, the whole place was a buzz!

The Wensleydale Railway Christmas Events for 2018

The Wensleydale Railway Christmas Events for 2018

There seems to be so much happening on the Wensleydale Railway end of November and into December that I thought it was well worth a mention on its own. Follow the link for full information The Wensleydale Railway but here’s just taster.

Santa calls on 1 December at 12 noon and there after during the afternoon and lots of dates in December until Christmas Eve, so miss him!

Great things happening in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounds in the lead up to Christmas 2018!

Great things happening in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounds in the lead up to Christmas 2018!

There’s always fun and excitement in December, as everywhere, with Christmas trees appearing, along with the usual Christmas decorations. Carols wafting on the breeze as you wander round the towns and just a general hum getting louder as the big day approaches! To get in to the spirit things there are always Christmas markets to be found. Harrogate Christmas Market, always very popular with over two hundred stalls of food and drink, crafts and Christmas gifts. Santa and his reindeers will be making an entrance and there will be a children’s funfair.

Lofthouse to Scar House Reservoir in Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Lofthouse to Scar House Reservoir in Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

What a truly wonderful walk. Was it the weather? Was it the terrain? Was it the fantastic views? All these things made this walk quite special. It’s been years since I’ve walked in upper Nidderdale, I’d nearly forgotten how beautiful it can be. Right at the top where the lush grass changes to moorland we set off on our, albeit ten mile, walk. We parked just at the side of the road on Trapping Hill before Lofthouse, we came over from Masham, and followed the footpath to Middlesmoor and beyond.

Circular walk by Addlebrough, taking in Bainbridge and Askrigg and back to Thornton Rust in Wensleydale

Circular walk by Addlebrough, taking in Bainbridge and Askrigg and back to Thornton Rust in Wensleydale

Another fantastic walk, about ten miles in all, pretty easy going for most of the way and some fabulous views across to Semer Water and the splendour of Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales. Again, take your map for reference as my directions may be quite sparse but will give you a very good idea of the route we took. Stay safe, wear appropriate footwear and clothing, take snacks and water and above all, you know it, enjoy!

Circular walk from Masham, venturing to Hackfall Wood, Grewelthorpe, Nutwith Common Wood and back to Masham

Circular walk from Masham, venturing to Hackfall Wood, Grewelthorpe, Nutwith Common Wood and back to Masham in Nidderdale AONB

For this walk of just over ten miles you really will need your map! OS Landranger 99. We set off on a wonderful autumnal day from Masham, easily parking our cars in the market place. Head off east past the Primary School and follow the track along the river through arable land to a path that goes off to the left. Continue along the river side until you come out onto the road, left again over the bridge and immediately over the bridge take the path to the left to take you along the river side. Keep going along here and you will eventually come to Hackfall Wood.
