Thoralby...In the lower reaches of Bishopdale the steep valley sides unfold and the high fells of Stake and Wasset diminish as the valley is embraced by first Walden to the south and then Wensleydale to the north. The flat valley floor also rises and undulates with drumlins and moraine deposited in the glacial past, narrowing the dale and providing a platform to bridge Bishopdale Beck. Here is where the village of Thoralby nestles into the southern slopes amongst rich meadows, woodland and pasture with a vantage that views to Bishopdale, the slopes of Wasset Fell, Penhill and on into Wensleydale. The village is small but straggling with lanes and footpaths running to the higher fells or surrounding hamlets and farmhouses. A tranquil place with a small village green at its heart but a community large enough to support a shop/Post Office and local pub. |
