Spennithorne...Spennithorne is almost ¼ mile from Harmby but with the gentle development on the fringes of both villages it is difficult to say where one ends and the other begins. Spennithorne is in the lower reaches of Wensleydale where the valley loses its steepness and the meadows gently roll. The fells seem distant, the trees more abundant, but the quietness is still there. The river Ure meanders in huge lazy curves almost touching Middleham, serene with its towering castle, and then loops across the valley almost to the fringes of Spennithorne. The village shows its history with a church, first consecrated in the 12th century and a 17th century inn. The school is a little younger but serves to remind that this is a thriving community. |
