Preston under Scar...Preston is a small south facing village hugging a sheltered escarpment on the slopes of mid-Wensleydale facing the magnificent slopes and steps of Penhill. The village grew around the once rich lead mines whose remains and ruins are still evident in the landscape. The houses too reflect the mining history as well as agricultural roots with quaint stone terraces and cottage gardens nestling to form a tranquil haven on the hillside . The elevated position gives stunning views over Bishopdale, Wensleydale and out towards the Vale of York. Many footpaths centre on the village so there is plenty of opportunity for walking and also within walking distance, on the same escarpment, is the stately Bolton Castle where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1568. |
