Hawes...Hawes is a small, thriving market town close to the banks of the meandering river Ure, almost at the head of Wensleydale. Its limited but random development over the past 300 years, pushing out from the cobbles of the market place, has produced narrow wynds and side streets that are a delight to explore. The town is popular with tourists and in spite of its rugged appearance is noted for the welcome and warmth provided by the pubs, restaurants and shops that satisfy every visitors need. A cattle mart and general market are still held once a week and there are many visitor attractions as diverse as the Dales Countryside Museum and the traditional craft of rope making. Hawes is surrounded by beautiful meadowland, pasture and rising fellsides that provide breathtaking walks by river and stream and is also an ideal base for longer excursions throughout the Dales, Cumbria and The Lakes. |
